@Jacek: Aye, that’s exactly what James said too, and the way I see it:

* A lot of Resis’ in-UI pictures are already squashed/stretched because they don’t know how to resize, and may be closer to 4:3 in many cases than some of the other oddball stuff. I’d rather have yummy omelets than half-ass, sad aspect ratios. DEFINITELY agree about advance communication, tho.

* Also — https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3692 AKA “Add ability to maintain aspect ratio for profile, places, classifieds, etc. pictures”.

@Torley: Super! A word of warning -- if you change them to make them more consistent, it will break existing content. You'll get a lot of people complaining for about a week, and then everyone will forget about it. But sometimes you have to break a crooked bone to make an omelet. Or something like that.

You could probably mitigate a lot of the complaining if you give people a week or so's advanced notice on the blog, so store owners etc. have some time to prepare new images before the changes roll out.

Here's my own approximations of some of these aspect ratios (I was letting James Linden know about it today, he agrees they should be more consistent):

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
All of these aspect ratios were measured at UI size = 1.000:

* Search > All for "Classifieds", "People", and "Places" - 4:3 (256x192 pixels)
* Search > Places and Classified tabs - ~7:5 (398x282 pixels)
* Search > Land tab - ~7:5 (358x252 pixels)

* Profile > 2nd Life tab - ~4:3 (178x133 pixels)
* Profile > Picks tab - ~16:9 (288x162 pixels)
* Profile > 1st Life tab - 1:1 (133x133 pixels)
* Profile > Classifieds tab - ~3:2 (206x137 pixels)

* About Land > Options tab - ~3:2 (178x117 pixels)

* Group Information > General tab's "Group Insignia" - 1:1 (126x126 pixels)

I've changed 40:28 to 10:7 as per Lex's suggestion. (Although properly, the ratio is more like 4000:2823. It's really crazy.)

I also double checked some other numbers, and saw that About Landmark displays as that weird 10:7 ratio. At least it's consistent with Search.

Unfortunately, there's still the mis-match between parcel snapshots (10:7) and picks (16:9) — which is problematic, because new picks use the parcel snapshot by default, stretching it. :(

Good catch, Torley and Ordinal. Confirmed that the Profile Picks Pics (say that 10 times fast) are displayed at 16:9. *scurries to update the guide*

Whoa, I knew things were freaky, but I didn't realize they were that freaky. 7:4 for picks?! What the heck?

One note: 40:28 = 10:7... which, while it's a little more reasonable sounding, is still pretty wonky.

I had a closer look and “Profile Picks” appears to be closer to 16:9, which Ordinal Malaprop noted as well — https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-398 . Can you please double-check? :)

Oh gosh, HANDY ALERT! I was looking for something like this to pass along to folks who asked (it's a righteous curiosity)... and look what you've done! Thanx Jacek. (That 40:28 aspect ratio is weeeeird.)
