    This should help anyone who wants to make images to be displayed in the SL (classifieds, picks, etc.) and not have them be horribly stretched or squashed by Linden Lab’s inconsistent use of image aspect ratios. I don’t bother to cover aspect ratios for textures to be used on prims, as the proper aspect ratio in that case depends entirely on the prim’s dimensions.

    If you’re making an image for…

    • a classifieds listing … use 10:7.
    • a parcel snapshot … use 10:7.
      (But know that it will be stretched horizontally in people’s picks.)
    • your own pick … use 16:9.
    • a 2nd life profile … use 4:3.
    • a 1st life profile … use 1:1.
    • a group insignia … use 1:1.
    • an invitation or ‘view me’ image … use powers of 2.
      E.g. 64, 128, 256, or 512 pixels wide/high.

    List of Aspect Ratios & Notable Places They Appear

    • 16:9 (1.78:1) — Profile (Picks)
    • 3:2 (1.5:1) — About Land (Options / Snapshot)
    • 10:7 (1.43:1) — Search (Classifieds, Popular Places, Land Sales, and Places), About Landmark
    • 4:3 (1.33:1) — Profile (2nd Life)
    • 1:1 (1:1) — Group Insignia, Profile (1st Life)

    Update, Dec 6:

    • Torley pointed out that Profile Picks are 16:9 (1.78:1), rather than 7:4 (1.75:1) as I had previously thought.
    • Lex Neva pointed out that 40:28 is equivalent to 10:7.
    • I’ve also corrected About Landmark, which displays at 40:28 (1.43:1), rather than 4:3 (1.33:1). Accordingly, I’ve changed my recommendation for parcel snapshots to 40:28 instead of 4:3, as it does not seem to be displayed anywhere at true 4:3.

    Oh gosh, HANDY ALERT! I was looking for something like this to pass along to folks who asked (it’s a righteous curiosity)… and look what you’ve done! Thanx Jacek. (That 40:28 aspect ratio is weeeeird.)

  • Torley Says:

    I had a closer look and “Profile Picks” appears to be closer to 16:9, which Ordinal Malaprop noted as well https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-398 . Can you please double-check? :)

  • Lex Neva Says:

    Whoa, I knew things were freaky, but I didn’t realize they were that freaky. 7:4 for picks?! What the heck?

    One note: 40:28 = 10:7… which, while it’s a little more reasonable sounding, is still pretty wonky.

  • Jacek Says:

    Good catch, Torley and Ordinal. Confirmed that the Profile Picks Pics (say that 10 times fast) are displayed at 16:9. *scurries to update the guide*

  • Jacek Says:

    I’ve changed 40:28 to 10:7 as per Lex’s suggestion. (Although properly, the ratio is more like 4000:2823. It’s really crazy.)

    I also double checked some other numbers, and saw that About Landmark displays as that weird 10:7 ratio. At least it’s consistent with Search.

    Unfortunately, there’s still the mis-match between parcel snapshots (10:7) and picks (16:9) — which is problematic, because new picks use the parcel snapshot by default, stretching it. :(

  • Torley Says:

    Here’s my own approximations of some of these aspect ratios (I was letting James Linden know about it today, he agrees they should be more consistent):

    All of these aspect ratios were measured at UI size = 1.000:

    * Search > All for “Classifieds”, “People”, and “Places” – 4:3 (256×192 pixels)
    * Search > Places and Classified tabs – ~7:5 (398×282 pixels)
    * Search > Land tab – ~7:5 (358×252 pixels)

    * Profile > 2nd Life tab – ~4:3 (178×133 pixels)
    * Profile > Picks tab – ~16:9 (288×162 pixels)
    * Profile > 1st Life tab – 1:1 (133×133 pixels)
    * Profile > Classifieds tab – ~3:2 (206×137 pixels)

    * About Land > Options tab – ~3:2 (178×117 pixels)

    * Group Information > General tab’s “Group Insignia” – 1:1 (126×126 pixels)

  • Jacek Says:

    @Torley: Super! A word of warning — if you change them to make them more consistent, it will break existing content. You’ll get a lot of people complaining for about a week, and then everyone will forget about it. But sometimes you have to break a crooked bone to make an omelet. Or something like that.

    You could probably mitigate a lot of the complaining if you give people a week or so’s advanced notice on the blog, so store owners etc. have some time to prepare new images before the changes roll out.

  • Torley Says:

    @Jacek: Aye, that’s exactly what James said too, and the way I see it:

    * A lot of Resis’ in-UI pictures are already squashed/stretched because they don’t know how to resize, and may be closer to 4:3 in many cases than some of the other oddball stuff. I’d rather have yummy omelets than half-ass, sad aspect ratios. DEFINITELY agree about advance communication, tho.
